“Headline was among the first investors in Mistral AI,” says Jonathan Userovici, General Partner at Headline. “If we were to break it down, I think you could say that we backed the company mainly because of the unique profiles of its three founders.”
AMONG THE FEW
Founded in May 2023 by three friends with academic roots at École Polytechnique in Paris, Mistral AI is now valued at €6 billion. Speaking with Jonathan, it quickly becomes clear that the seed financing, backed by the EIF, was driven by the exceptional backgrounds of the founders: Arthur Mensch, Guillaume Lample, and Timothée Lacroix. “They had previously worked at Google DeepMind and Meta and were among perhaps 150 people globally who had hands-on experience with large language models at that scale.”
BEST IN CLASS
Mistral AI develops high-performance, efficient, and accessible large language models (LLMs), offering both open-source and commercial solutions. Its main clients are B2B enterprises looking to boost productivity through AI – across sectors like healthcare, sales, marketing, customer support, finance, IT, and defence. What sets Mistral AI apart is its commitment to open-source innovation. “Mistral AI empowers any company or individual to build upon their AI models,” Jonathan explains. “Their collaborative, open-source approach is what fosters real innovation.”
Another distinguishing factor is that Mistral AI is a European company – still a rarity in the LLM space. When asked about the future of open-source AI, Jonathan is clear: it’s a race. “You stay in the race by having the technical ability to produce new models – and to do so quickly. In five years, there won’t be a hundred companies competing, but open source means there’s space for some to focus and excel in specific areas.”
BUILD TOGETHER, WIN TOGETHER
That’s what makes Mistral AI’s mission so compelling. They understand that developers might use their models as a foundation to build something even better. “In the end,” Jonathan says, “Headline, Mistral, and I all believe that open models will win. They benefit developers everywhere – not just a single company. In many ways, it’s the democratisation of AI – a technology with enormous potential.”
