The Slovene Equity Growth Investment Programme (SEGIP) was launched in November 2017 with an initial funding of EUR 100 million, funded in equal parts by Slovenia’s SID Banka and the EIF. The funding was invested alongside private investors and has supported Slovene SMEs’ and midcaps’ access to growth and expansion equity capital.

SEGIP’s objective is to support Slovene SMEs and midcaps, to attract international equity investments to Slovenia and to build local capacity by supporting emerging fund managers who commit a significant part of their investments to Slovene companies. This is one of the first financing programmes launched by the EIF under the EIF-NPI Equity Platform and the Investment Plan for Europe in cooperation with EU National Promotional Institutions. SID Banka became a founding member of the EIF-NPI Equity Platform’s General Forum in September 2016.

The EIF manages and deploys the SEGIP through commitments to venture capital and private equity funds. The programme is not restricted to any particular sector. Part of the investment programme is dedicated to local market development and capacity building. As part of the SEGIP, the EIF has managed a number of separate selection processes targeting emerging teams established in Slovenia and focusing their investment activities in Slovenia.

Following the success of the initial cooperation, SEGIP has been topped up twice with additional €120 million to support technology transfer as well as early stage start-ups, scale-ups and family businesses seeking a change of ownership. Following the latest selection of fund managers in 2024, the EIF and SID Banka have agreed to launch another dedicated call for expression of interest to select an additional VC fund.
