The German Future Fund (GFF) - EIF Growth Facility

The GFF-EIF Growth Facility is an equity mandate deployed by EIF and forms part of the EUR 10bn German Future Fund launched and backed by the German government, represented by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Actiont and the Federal Ministry of Finance on 24 March 2021 (Press release - Launch of the “Zukunftsfonds”).

It has a volume of up to EUR 3.5bn, funded from the German Future Fund administrated by KfW and KfW Capital, with systematic co-investments from the ERP-EIF Facility and the EIF.

The GFF-EIF Growth Facility supports further growth- and later stage financing in Germany as part of the broader ambition to sustain the development of a pan-European ecosystem that is able to back EU companies on their path to internationalisation and global leadership.

Against this background, EIF aims to leverage its unique experience and visibility in the market to deploy a broad range of equity instruments effectively supporting innovation, and focusing in particular on digitalisation, clean-tech, life sciences and other relevant sectors.

Commitments from the GFF-EIF Growth Facility, often combined with other EIF mandates, aim to support the funding of portfolio companies based or active in Germany; supported funds are, however, also invest outside Germany. As the facility also invests in pan-European funds established outside Germany, it also increases the visibility of German growth companies throughout Europe — as demonstrated by fund managers setting up office presences in Germany. At the same time, pan-European funds will support a growth ecosystem in Germany and across Europe — with the facility serving as its nucleus. The overarching aim is to back German companies on their path to internationalisation and global leadership.

By end of 2022 the GFF-EIF Growth Facility has already supported more than 20 funds with some EUR 850m in commitments. Insofar, the GFF-EIF Growth Facility aims to replicate of the ERP-EIF Facility, launched 2004 with more than 4 000 SME investments today, and expand it to the later stage funding ecosystem.
