“Comedy has a dual role in today’s society,” says Rudy Lejeune, co-founder of L’Échappée – an upcoming cultural centre in Brussels that aims to nourish the growing comedy ecosystem in Belgium. “In today’s world, you need to laugh and catch a break from reality,” Rudy continues. “But I also truly believe that comedy can act as a vehicle for social commentary. It is a platform for expression shaped by real people, often speaking candidly about societal issues and, in doing so, fostering public dialogue long after the show is over.”
The ecosystem breathing creativity
Together with co-founder Thomas Hourdé, Rudy started the L’Échappée project in 2022. Both men are veterans of the Brussels and Paris comedy scenes respectively, and the idea for the project was to create a space where laughs could flourish, but also one that makes business sense: “We want the place to be a place of development – not just a performance venue which sits idle most of the time.”
The L’Échappée venue occupies a 1,400-square-metre former parking structure that is now being transformed into a cultural centre featuring a 150-seat theatre, a 60-seat comedy club, co-working spaces, meeting rooms, a restaurant and a bar. “By integrating performance venues, co-working spaces, and food services under one roof, we aim to foster a dynamic atmosphere that lives and breathes creativity,” explains Rudy.
A network of laughs
The word l’échappée translates as the breakaway or the escape, but for Rudy and Thomas, the name reflects something deeper: the idea of breaking away mentally by going out, creating, and engaging with others.
In 2019, Rudy founded What the Fun to help emerging Belgian comedians break into the comedy scene. The platform now produces around 200 shows a year and supports more than 100 comedians.
He is now drawing on this network to programme upcoming shows at L’Échappée. “There’s a detailed monthly planning process. Of course, you need your seat-sellers, but we also make space for less established comedians. Growth and experimentation are extremely important to our business.”
Banking on comedy
L’Échappée was not always an easy sell when it came to securing loans. “It’s a multi-faceted project that doesn’t fit a standard bank profile,” Rudy explains.
“Analysts struggled to categorise it: yes, we host comedy shows, but you also have to factor in the restaurant and bar.” That made it difficult to secure financing, but with the help of an EU-guaranteed loan through St’art, the team was able to push ahead with the renovation plans and bring the parking lot to life, with the grand opening aimed for early 2026.
“There’s something beautiful about a person getting on stage and sharing personal experiences with a room full of strangers. Spaces like this are rare, and the world is healthier for having them.”
