Leadership and people

The leadership framework of the EIF consists of three principal bodies.

Together, they oversee the day-to-day management, strategic proposals, and operational planning, with the EIF Chief Executive reporting directly to the Board of Directors. Furthermore, the EIF’s Statutes and Rules of Procedure provide more details on the role and operating principle of our governing bodies, including senior leadership.

EIF Chief Executive - Marjut Falkstedt

The Chief Executive (CE) is nominated by the shareholder holding the largest number of  shares (EIB) and is appointed by and reports to the Board of Directors for a term of up to five years, which may be renewed.

Marjut Falkstedt has been appointed Chief Executive by the EIF’s Board of Directors as of 1 January 2023.

The Chief Executive is responsible for the day-to-day management of the EIF.

Within the policies and guidelines adopted by the Board, the CE decides on transactions, mandates, as well as policy and strategic proposals, which may be presented to the Board for approval.

The Chief Executive also submits the EIF’s Operational Plan for the Board's approval, entailing operational, strategic and budgetary implications. Certain operations that are fulfilling specific criteria, may be approved by the Chief Executive acting under a delegation from the Board of Directors.

EIF Deputy Chief Executive - Merete Clausen

The Statutes foresee that the Chief Executive may be assisted by a deputy, nominated by the second largest shareholder and also appointed by the Board of Directors. The Deputy Chief Executive (DCE) shall replace the Chief Executive in their absence and be vested with the same powers.

Merete Clausen joined the EIF as Deputy Chief Executive on 16 January 2025 - read more in our press release here

Members of the ESMC

The Executive and Senior Management Committee (ESMC) has been established in January 2023 to allow the CE’s decision-making and day-to-day management of the EIF to occur on a sound and well-informed basis. The ESMC is chaired by the Head of CE/DCE Cabinet and comprises - in addition to the CE, the DCE, and the Head of Cabinet - the director from each service area of the EIF.
