Since beginning its Maltese operations, the EIF have supported SMEs and start-ups with equity and guarantees developed with national institutions and banks.
Programmes such as JEREMIE and InvestEU-backed guarantees have improved credit access and lowered borrowing costs. EIF tools target tech innovation, creative industries and green projects, strengthening micro-enterprises and positioning Malta as a regional innovation hub.

“As a mechanical engineer, I wanted to make our penthouse as energy‑efficient as possible… using continuous high‑quality insulation, airtightness, efficient windows and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery,” explains Paul Fenech from Ta’ Xbiex, Malta, aiming to build the country’s first certified low‑energy residence.
He secured a loan from Bank of Valletta, guaranteed by the EIF under a pilot scheme for energy efficiency, supporting renewable and efficiency investments in private buildings.

The EIF supports micro, small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) by working with a wide range of funds, banks and promotional banks, leasing companies, guarantee and microfinance institutions or any other financial institution financing to SMEs across Europe.
These act as EIF's financial intermediaries and provide financial products to SMEs.
