  • The financing will strengthen Patria Credit’s capital base and help it to expand its lending to small farmers in Romania, who often find it difficult to access traditional credit.

The European Investment Fund (EIF) has signed a RON 15 million (€3 million) subordinated loan agreement with Patria Credit IFN. The transaction is backed by InvestEU, the financing instrument designed to generate over €372 billion in additional investment in support of European Union policy priorities by 2027. The operation will enable Patria Credit to further expand its client outreach and portfolio size, especially in the field of micro-farms with limited access to traditional credit.

At the same time, the ten-year loan aims to improve the borrower’s ability to attract additional external funding resources. This subordinated loan is being granted under the InvestEU Capacity Building Investment product.

This transaction extends the successful partnership between the EIF and Patria Credit that started 11 years ago and is based on various support instruments. Patria Credit has used these instruments to grant loans with an EU guarantee to micro-businesses, especially in rural areas, thus enhancing these entrepreneurs' access to finance. So far, over 4 200 credit agreements have reached local micro-businesses through the Employment and Social Innovation (EaSI) and InvestEU programmes, the equivalent of over RON 129 million.

EIF Chief Executive Marjut Falkstedt said: “Capacity-building instruments have proven to be a very useful tool, connecting European institutions with local partners in order to make financing more readily available for the smallest players in the economy. That’s why, through the InvestEU programme, we are happy to be joining forces with Patria Credit once again, to strengthen their capital base and ultimately generate fresh support for Romanian farmers and vegetable growers during challenging times.”

“This new loan proves the trust that EIF has in us, and it attests to our sustained growth in recent years and our dedication to rural microfinancing in Romania. In our more than 19 years of experience with rural entrepreneurs, I have learned that financial inclusion is one of the important steps for the development of the economy. The partnership with EIF is a strategic one and it helps us to develop and continue our mission of improving the level of financial inclusion in Romania,” said General Manager of Patria Credit Raluca Andreica.

Patria Credit registered a net profit of €1.55 million in 2022 and reported a 22% increase in the value of its portfolio to €32.5 million. The non-bank financial institution is the largest financier of small farms under 10 hectares in the Romanian countryside, and over 79% of the micro loans granted by it are offered with the InvestEU guarantee, through the strategic partnership with the EIF, part of the European Investment Bank Group (EIB Group). Its clients mainly come from the large vegetable-growing basins of Romania and use the loans to support investment in agriculture.

Patria Credit‘s development plans for 2023 include continued sustained growth while maintaining the traditional target group of customers, including expansion to other underserved geographic areas in Romania.
