25 March 2025: Traditionally, investors in private markets have been challenged by a lack of robust data compared to public markets. In Europe, insufficient performance data in the VC and PE sectors is reducing domestic investment from the continent’s institutional and retail investors, despite demand for private markets increasing.
The European Investment Fund has outlined plans to address this challenge with a new initiative to increase transparency across Europe’s private markets through the availability of market data.
The programme will see the launch of a dedicated online portal providing investors with unprecedented public access to a selection of historical fund performance data in Europe’s VC and PE sectors. The initiative is designed to lower barriers to investing in Europe’s private markets, supporting a deeper domestic capital market to provide financing for Europe’s SMEs and Mid-Cap companies.
“By enhancing transparency in the venture capital and private equity sectors, we are not only fostering investor confidence but also broadening the field of potential investors, which will ultimately drive growth for European businesses,” said Marjut Falkstedt, EIF Chief Executive.
"This pioneering initiative will facilitate equity fundraising, unlock investment in European businesses and support the Capital Markets Union." said Nicola Beer, European Investment Bank Vice President.
“With private markets playing an increasingly important role in portfolios, the availability of robust and reliable data is essential for providing the transparency that investors need. Through this solution, we are aiming to make investing in Europe’s private markets easier and more accessible, supporting the development of a deeper capital market that helps contribute to the long-term growth of the European economy,” said Philippe Verboogen, Global Head of Alternative Client Engagement at BlackRock.
The portal, which will be free and easy to access for interested investors across Europe, will host a broad range of anonymous European fund performance data from over the last 10 years covering a sample of European funds broader than the EIF portfolio. Users of the portal will be able to access anonymised fund performance data across vintages and strategies, enabling them to benchmark key performance metrics including Internal Rate of Return (IRR), Distributed to Paid-In Capital (DPI) and Total Value to Paid In Capital (TVPI). Over time the platform will be expanded with additional data and research from multiple sources.
The platform will be co-developed and maintained by EIF and BlackRock, underlining the collaborative nature of the initiative.
